Posting this because I wish someone had told me sooner. Four months on two different sites, maybe sixty first messages, zero replies. I was writing what I thought were good messages, polite, a bit funny, mentioned being new but eager to learn. Silence.

Three weeks ago I changed one thing. I stopped writing about myself and started writing about something actually on their profile. One woman mentioned she was rereading a rope book I know, so my whole opener was asking whether the second edition fixed the photo captions. She replied in an hour. We’ve been talking since, met for coffee on Saturday.

So, question for the room: is that everyone’s experience? Is specific and short really the whole game, or did I just get lucky once?

This matches my experience almost exactly. The specific detail is the whole trick. It proves you read, and reading is so rare that it counts as charm now. My openers are two sentences and a question and they do fine.

From the receiving end: I get maybe fifteen messages a week and I can tell within one line who actually read my profile. The ones that quote something back at me, or ask about the thing I said about aftercare, those get answers even when I'm not sure we fit. The ones that open with a compliment about my photos get archived unread, and honestly the long ones are worse, three paragraphs from a stranger feels like homework I never assigned. Short, specific, patient. That's it, that's the whole meta.

four months of silence builds character lol. but yeah same journey here. the other thing nobody says: fix the profile before blaming the openers. mine was a wall of rules and zero personality, no wonder the good messages I sent went nowhere. rewrote it to sound like an actual human and suddenly my mediocre openers started working

What the handbook says about this

Both halves of the problem end up on this board: a profile that says nothing, and an opener that goes nowhere. Underneath both is usually the same worry about being found by the wrong person, so that one is here too.
