Eleven times this year I have crossed Paris after work, spent an evening at the far end of it, and come home on the last train or not at all. I have got very good at it. I have also worked out that it costs me a whole night's sleep each time and a quantity of money on taxis I would very much like back.
Twenty nine, Paris, switch, eight years. The reason is not that there is nobody near me. There is a circle within twenty minutes of my door and it is decent. The reason is that at twenty three I met somebody on the other side of the river, and then somebody else, and I built the habit of looking across the map before looking down my own street, and I have never really broken it.
So this is an attempt to break it. I would like to meet somebody within half an hour of me, on one line, without changes, and find out whether the thing I have been travelling for was ever actually about the travelling.
I lead about half the time. What I want is regular rather than spectacular: someone I see twice a week without it being an expedition. I share a flat with one person who knows about all of this and does not care, which makes hosting possible with notice.
I would want to write for a bit first. I am not good at deciding anything about a person in an hour, which is probably why the day trips kept happening.
