The last one lived seventy miles away and I drove it every Friday for six years. I know how that sounds to people who describe crossing the city as a trek. It was not difficult. I liked the drive, I liked arriving, and the distance meant that when we were together neither of us wasted any of it on being bored.
Fifty five, up on the Staffordshire side, ten years leading, and back on here since the spring.
Geography is genuinely not a problem for me. Coventry, Worcester, Stoke, anywhere in this region: if it is worth the trip I will make it, and I will not produce it as a grievance in month four, because I am agreeing to it now with my eyes open.
What I want in return is somebody who takes planning seriously. This works when both people are reliable and collapses immediately when one of them is not. I need a person who will hold a date, who will tell me a fortnight ahead when something has changed, and who understands that I cannot call round for an hour on a Tuesday because the mood has taken us.
In between I want the dynamic to be genuinely live rather than dormant. Contact every day in some form, expectations that hold when I am nowhere near. Not looking for something that only exists at weekends. And not looking for anybody who wants to be surprised, since I will always be arriving at a time we agreed on.
