We have been together four years and this came up in February, sideways, during an argument about something else entirely. Since then it has taken over an enormous amount of our conversation and a fair amount of our life and we have almost no idea what we are doing.
Twenty eight and thirty, inside the ring road, one rented flat and two jobs neither of us particularly likes. We have read a great deal, which has taught us the words and almost nothing about a Tuesday.
What we would like is to talk to a couple who have been doing this for years. Not to do anything with. To sit across from and ask the boring questions. How do you negotiate when one of you wants something the other does not. What do you do the morning after something goes wrong. What do you wish somebody had told you at the start.
We are going to say the awkward part plainly. We are aware that a young couple saying they are new can read as an invitation to somebody who enjoys that, and we have already had three messages that made the assumption. We are not offering ourselves to be shown anything. We want a conversation, and we will meet as four people in a public place, and both of us will be there every single time.
If a friendship comes out of it we would be delighted. If nothing did, we would still have learned something. Not looking for a single person. Not looking to be an audience for anybody. Not looking for advice from a couple who started last year.
