right, this is a slightly annoyed post and i apologise in advance.

for months my profile was vague and i got vague matches, and everything i read here said the same thing: be specific, specificity filters, the discomfort is the profile working.

so i rewrote it three weeks ago. properly specific. what i want, what i do not, the dynamic i am after, in plain words rather than hints.

results: more messages, worse messages. noticeably worse. where i used to get friendly nothing i now get people responding to the specifics like a menu, several of whom have clearly read only the two or three lines that interested them and none of the rest. one person quoted a phrase back at me and asked when i was free, which is a sentence i will be thinking about for a while.

so what went wrong? is there a way of being specific that filters rather than advertises, or did i just find out what my particular specifics attract and this is the actual answer?

What the handbook says about this

Both halves of the problem end up on this board: a profile that says nothing, and an opener that goes nowhere. Underneath both is usually the same worry about being found by the wrong person, so that one is here too.
