Two weeks on the rig and two weeks off. When I am on I am unreachable for most of the day and too tired for anything when I am not. When I am off I have fourteen consecutive days with absolutely nothing in them.
Most people hear that and hear the bad half. A few people hear the good half, which is that for two weeks a month I am completely available, at any hour, in a way that almost nobody with a normal job ever is. Those are the people I am writing to.
Thirty, offshore when I am working, which is not really the same as living anywhere. Three years in this. I have mostly bottomed, and I recently started learning to top, badly, with somebody patient who has since moved on to other things. Switch, then, but an honest one: competent at one half and a beginner at the other.
On my time off I can be anywhere in this city at any hour of it. Cross town at four in the afternoon, the far side of the beltway on a Tuesday, none of it is a drive I would think about twice, and nothing competes for the days. That is the actual offer and I think it is a decent one.
Not looking for daily contact while I am on shift, because I cannot deliver it and I would rather not promise something I will fail at in week two. Not looking for anything that ends the moment I go back to work.
