I am deaf. I lipread well in good conditions and not at all in bad ones, and the number of otherwise promising conversations that have ended at the words let us just hop on a call is now somewhere past thirty.
Thirty nine, west London, eleven years in this, three dynamics all with hearing partners, so none of this is a new problem for me and I am not asking anybody to learn a language. What actually helps is small: text rather than voice, quiet places with light on your face, and saying it again differently instead of louder or, worse, never mind. That last one is the one that stings, and everybody does it once, and it is fine as long as it is once.
In terms of what I want: something ongoing with one person. I have topped and bottomed roughly equally and I like being on the receiving end of a firm plan, but I also like making them. There is a practical thing worth naming. A lot of the standard vocabulary here is spoken and quick, and if you are behind me or in the dark I am effectively not there. So we would need our own way of doing that, and every partner I have had has found it interesting rather than a nuisance.
I am not looking for anybody who thinks this makes me vulnerable. I have run a team of nine for six years and vulnerable is not the word.
