Switch, commuter belt, free on Tuesdays and never at weekends

someone whose life also happens on the wrong days

the commuter belt, London

My mother lives with us now and I am the one who does the weekends, so my life happens between Monday and Thursday and that is not going to change for some years.

Fifty one, out in the commuter belt, twenty years in this on and off. The off periods have all been for the same sort of reason: somebody needed something and I was the person who was around. I do not resent it, I would just quite like a bit of my own life running alongside, and I have stopped waiting for a convenient moment because there is not going to be one.

Switch, and at this stage genuinely both, which took me until my forties to be relaxed about. I would happily be someone's project on a Tuesday afternoon and run the show on a Wednesday. What I would like is one person with a similarly awkward life, so that neither of us is apologising all the time. Shift workers, self employed, other carers, anybody whose diary is not shaped like everybody else's.

I am not going to be able to do spontaneous. I need a few days' notice and I need it not to be a disappointment when I have to move something. That has been the thing that ended the last two attempts and I understand why.
