She got an offer she was right to take and I did not ask her to turn it down. That is the honest summary of how nine years ended, in April, without a single argument, which somehow made it worse.
Fifty one, the Valley, dominant, twenty four years in. I am posting this four months later than I should have, because I spent the first three telling everybody I was fine.
What I want is what I had. That is the wrong thing to say in an advertisement and I am saying it anyway, because the alternative is pretending to be open to anything, and I am not. I want a long dynamic with one person, built slowly, that becomes ordinary and domestic and completely unremarkable to everyone except the two of us. I am not interested in a scene. I am not interested in meeting a series of people in order to find one.
I am in the Valley, I have a house and a dog with opinions, and for the first time in my life I work sensible hours.
Two honest warnings. I will compare things at first, silently, and I will get better at not doing it. And I am not able to be anybody's first experience of any of this, because I have no patience for teaching this year. What I have instead is depth, time, and a very specific idea of what home looks like.
