My arrangement of twenty years ended when he died, three years ago this month. I am not writing that to be pitied. I am writing it because I have finally reached the point where the alternative to trying again is a very quiet decade, and I am not ready for that.
Sixty seven, the South Bay, dominant, thirty one years in. Formal by temperament, which in practice means titles, standing rules, a household with a shape to it, and a great deal of ordinary domestic time inside that shape.
What I am not is theatrical. I have never owned a costume. I do not raise my voice. The authority I have is the sort that comes from being consistent for decades, and it does not need a performance to be felt.
I would like something with permanence in it. That word frightens people, so let me be precise: I mean a defined role, agreed and reviewed, that both of us intend to keep. Where anybody lives is a question for much later and possibly never.
I am in good health, I drive, I cook well, and I have a garden that has kept me sane. I would rather you were over forty. Not on principle. It is that everyone younger who has approached me in the last three years wanted a father, and I am nobody's father.
