Once the year turns properly hot I stop running anything at all. The city fills up, my work triples, and the things I care about doing well need a kind of attention that is not available to me in February.
Rather than fight that for twenty years I built around it, and it has worked better than I expected. Forty nine, south zone, dominant, four dynamics of real length, and all of them ran hard from May to October and then went dormant.
Dormant does not mean absent. There is still contact, there are still a couple of small standing rules, and we still see each other. What stops is the structure: the daily requirements, the reporting, the standards. Everybody is let off, on purpose, with a date for when it starts again.
Two people have told me that the restart in May is the best part of the whole year, which I think is because everybody arrives having missed it rather than having endured it. What I want inside the season is a lot: service, protocol, real obedience, a submissive who is at their best inside a demanding routine.
Not looking for anybody who needs the same thing all twelve months, and that is a completely reasonable need. Not looking for a person who will spend the summer testing whether the pause is real. Not looking for somebody who cannot tolerate being told, in advance, when they will be put down.
