Between us we have fifteen years of experience in this and we cannot find the door in Toronto. We arrived two years ago from a smaller, older, much more closed world where we knew everybody and everybody knew us, and we have discovered that a big open city with a lot of everything is somehow harder to get into than a small closed one.
Thirty three and thirty four, the west end, together eight years, married for five.
Part of it is language. We both work in English all day and are perfectly fluent, and we both find that in this particular subject we lose about a third of ourselves. Nuance goes first. Humour goes with it. We come across as more serious and more formal than we are, and by the time we have relaxed enough to sound like ourselves the conversation has usually finished.
So we would like to meet people with some patience for that. What we want, in order: a couple or two to know socially, and then, if it happens, a submissive to share, which is what we had at home for six years and miss enormously.
She leads. He assists, which is a role we have never found a good English word for. Not looking for anybody who wants to explain Canada to us. Not looking to be a novelty. Not looking for anything before several conversations with all of us in the room.
