genuine question about whether i am being unreasonable.

i get a fair number of messages that are one word. hi, hey, hello. no question, no reference to anything on my profile, nothing.

for about a year i answered them all, politely, and asked something back. in almost every case what came back was another very short message, and then it either died or i ended up carrying the entire conversation like a tour guide.

so a few months ago i stopped. now they get deleted unread, or near enough.

and i feel a bit rotten about it, because i know at least some of those are shy people who could not think of anything better, and i have been the person staring at a blank message box unable to produce a sentence.

what do you all do? is there a middle option i am missing, or is the honest answer that a one word opener tells you enough and everyone pretending otherwise is being polite.

What the handbook says about this

Both halves of the problem end up on this board: a profile that says nothing, and an opener that goes nowhere. Underneath both is usually the same worry about being found by the wrong person, so that one is here too.
