feedback i did not ask for but probably needed. someone i had been talking to for a fortnight told me, quite kindly, that my profile reads like terms and conditions.

i went and looked at it with fresh eyes and she is right. it is eleven lines and nine of them are things i do not do, will not discuss, expect people to have read, or require before meeting. all of it is true. all of it i arrived at for good reasons, most of them learned the hard way.

but reading it as a stranger, it is a page of conditions with a person somewhere behind it. there is nothing in it that makes you want to meet me. it does not even say what i like, only what i will not have.

i do not want to soften it into meaninglessness, because vague profiles are how i ended up needing half those rules. but there is obviously a middle setting and i cannot see it from in here.

what is the balance? does anyone have a version of this that manages to be clear and still sound like a human being wrote it.

What the handbook says about this

Both halves of the problem end up on this board: a profile that says nothing, and an opener that goes nowhere. Underneath both is usually the same worry about being found by the wrong person, so that one is here too.
