took the advice that gets given here about a hundred times a week and went to my local munch on friday.

sat there for two hours. spoke to the person who took my name at the door, ordered a drink, and then sat on the end of a long table listening to a group of people who have obviously known each other for years talk about someone called dave and a thing that happened at a party in the summer.

two people said hello. neither of them asked me anything. nobody was rude. it was just very clear that i had walked into somebody else’s friendship group and there was no mechanism for me to get into it.

i left at half nine and felt worse than i had before i went, which was not what i was expecting from something described everywhere as the easy first step.

so is this normal for a first one? is it that particular group? and is there something i was supposed to do that i did not do, because everyone talks about munches as though turning up is the whole skill.

What the handbook says about this

Most arguments on this board are about timing. When to ask for the call, when to stop talking and pick a cafe, and what to do with the hour once it exists. The rest are about the arrangements, which is where the board stops disagreeing.
