been reading profiles for about three weeks now and i feel like i have wandered into a trade conference.
there are acronyms. there are words that clearly mean something specific that i can only half guess at from context. there are phrases that i am fairly sure mean different things to different people, because i have seen the same one used in two ways in the same afternoon.
i keep a tab open and look things up, and by the time i have finished reading a profile i have forgotten what i thought of the person.
my worry is twofold. one, that i will message somebody and use a word wrong and out myself as a tourist. two, and worse, that i will nod along to something i do not actually understand and end up agreeing to something i did not mean to agree to.
so how much of this do i need before i talk to anyone? is there a short list that actually matters, and is it acceptable to just ask someone what they mean, or does that mark you out?
