I manage a restaurant kitchen. Friday, Saturday and Sunday belong to other people. That has been true for nineteen years and it will be true until I retire or the industry changes, and the industry is not going to change.
So my life happens on Monday and Tuesday, in the daytime mostly. I have coffee at eleven in the morning while everybody else is at a desk, and I have got used to the fact that this makes me a strange fit for almost anybody. Forty one, Houston. Switch, though the balance has shifted over the years and these days I mostly top. I like control in a low key way. Not a lot of equipment, not a lot of ceremony, mostly rules that run through the ordinary parts of a week.
Other hospitality people, nurses, anyone on shifts, retired people, anybody who works from home and can take an afternoon: you are who I am writing to. What has failed before is somebody agreeing that the schedule was fine and then slowly resenting it. Four months in it becomes a grievance. I would rather you looked at it now and decided honestly. I am tired most of the time, which is not a complaint, it is the job. I would still like somebody to come home to when the shift is over.
