Thirty years at this and you are the first strangers I have written to

Everybody I have ever done this with, I met through a person who knew us both. That is how it worked when I started and it kept working, and it means that at fifty four I am writing to strangers for the first time in my life and I am not at all sure I am any good at it.
Fifty four, switch, Villeurbanne, thirty years. The introductions dried up for the ordinary reasons. People moved, people stopped, and the woman who did most of the introducing died four years ago. Without her I discovered how much of my access to any of this had been running through one person's dinner table.
So I am here, and I find the format strange. Writing an advertisement about myself feels like the opposite of everything I was taught about how this is properly done. I keep wanting to ask who recommended you, which is not a question available to me.
What I want is what I have always had. Something long, both directions, built on knowing somebody properly first. Rules, service, protocol, and a great deal of ordinary time. I am formal about the parts that matter and casual about the rest.
I would like to meet reasonably soon, because I am much better in a room than on a page, as this post demonstrates. Not looking for anyone who wants a long correspondence. Not looking for a person who needs me to be fluent in how all of this works now. Not looking to be told that things have moved on, which I know, and which is why I am here.
