I work a continuous rota at a plant south of the city. Mornings, then afternoons, then nights, then four days off, in a pattern that takes five weeks to return to where it started. I can tell you exactly what I am doing on a Tuesday in November and I cannot tell you what I am doing next Saturday without consulting a chart.
Forty seven, dominant, east of the city, nineteen years in this. Two dynamics have died of the rota, and in both cases the person told me at the end that they had felt like an item being fitted in. That was fair and I have thought about it a great deal since.
What I do differently now is that the rota goes to the other person in advance, for the whole cycle, and they choose. That single change made the last arrangement work for three years. It ended for unrelated reasons and we are still friends.
What I want is a long dynamic with structure that does not depend on being in a room. Daily rules, reporting, tasks, and then blocks of proper time on my days off, which are frequently in the middle of the week when this city is empty and pleasant.
Not looking for anyone who needs a Saturday. Not looking for a person who will read a night shift as avoidance. Not looking for anything that requires me to be awake and coherent at eight in the evening during a week when I am plainly not.
