In twenty four years we have never once done anything in this city. Not because there is nothing here. Because between us we have worked in local institutions for four decades and there is nowhere in this place where one of us would not be recognised by somebody, and we made a decision early which has served us extremely well.
Fifty six and fifty eight, up the hill, together thirty one years. What that has meant in practice is a great many weekends elsewhere. Other cities, twice a year abroad, and a very clear line between our life here and the rest of it.
What we are looking for is another couple who would come along. Not a third and not a swap. Company. Four people who go somewhere for a weekend two or three times a year, who can be entirely themselves once they are two hundred kilometres from home, and who then come back and are ordinary neighbours to one another.
We would want to meet several times first, here, doing nothing at all interesting, because we are not going anywhere with people we do not know. He leads, she does not, and neither of us is looking to change that or to add to it.
Not looking for a couple who want to do anything locally, which we will refuse every time and which would eventually become a problem. Not looking to be anybody's introduction. Not looking for people who would find our carefulness excessive, because it has kept two careers intact and we are not revisiting it at our age.
