Before anything else I will need to know whether I can get into your building, whether there is a step at the door, and how wide the doorways are. That is the first conversation, it is not a mood killer, and the way somebody answers it tells me more about them than anything else in the exchange.
Forty one, Salford, submissive, eight years in, full time wheelchair user for six of them. I have a flat that is fully accessible, which means in practice that I host or we do not meet indoors, and I would rather say that plainly than have it emerge awkwardly in week three.
What I want is a long dynamic with somebody thoughtful. Protocol, structure, being held to a standard. Very little of what interests me is affected by any of this, and the parts that are can be worked around by anyone willing to have one practical conversation and then get on with it.
What I have run into repeatedly is not cruelty. It is people who become so careful that nothing ever happens, or people who decide in advance what I can and cannot want. Both are exhausting in different ways.
Not looking for a carer, and I have one, and it is a different job entirely. Not looking for anyone whose interest in me is really an interest in the chair. Not looking for someone who will need reassuring, repeatedly, that they are not going to break me.
