In the last twelve months we have been written to by eleven people who were in town for a few days and wanted to arrange something before they flew home. Every one of them was polite. Several of them were interesting. All of them treated us as an item on a weekend itinerary, and after the eleventh we stopped replying entirely.
Thirty four and thirty six, South Beach, together nine years, five of them with this.
We understand why it happens. We live in a place people come to in order to do the things they do not do at home, and we are on a board that a visitor can find in ten seconds. But we are not an attraction and we are not interested in being anybody's holiday.
What we want is people who live here, who we can see repeatedly over months, and with whom something can actually develop past a first evening. Another couple, ideally. We have been considering one person as well and we have not fully decided.
We are both switches, which we know complicates the search, and it is also the thing we most want to find in other people.
If you are visiting, we hope you have a wonderful time, and the answer is going to be no. It is nothing personal. It is the eleventh time.
