I have started four dynamics in the summer and every one of them died by October. My theory, after fifteen years of watching this city, is that nothing begun in August survives, because everybody is half absent, half elsewhere, and entirely willing to let a new thing lapse when the season starts and there is suddenly something to do every night.

So I have become deliberate about it. I talk to people through the summer and I begin things in the fall. What that means in practice is that if you write to me now, I will want to have a long conversation and probably meet you twice, and I will be honest that I am not going to propose anything structured until the weather breaks.
This is not a trick to make anybody wait. It is that I have watched the same thing happen enough times to stop pretending it was bad luck.
What I want is one submissive, a weekly rhythm, and something that is still going the following summer, at which point we can both ignore my theory entirely.
If that sounds like an absurd amount of process for a personals ad, you are probably right, and there are forty people on this board who will happily start tonight.
