I come down at the beginning of October and I go back at the end of April. I have done that for eleven years and I will keep doing it until I cannot drive, so anybody writing to me should understand from the first line that this is a half year proposition with a long distance attached to the other half.
Sixty six, Fort Lauderdale in season, dominant, thirty years in. My wife and I were in this together for twenty four years. She died in a winter down here and I have kept coming back, partly out of habit and partly because the alternative was a very cold house.
What I am looking for is one person, for something ongoing, that runs intensely for six months and then continues at a distance for the other six. Written structure through the summer. Real presence through the winter. I have done exactly this once before, for three years, and it worked far better than either of us expected.
I am formal in manner and completely unformal in private, which people find confusing until they have met me twice.
I would rather you were over forty five, and I would rather you had done this before, because six months is not long enough to teach somebody from nothing and I would end up doing it badly.
