She works nights three weeks in four. He is on a rotating pattern that repeats every six weeks. The overlap of our free evenings, calculated last winter out of grim curiosity, is about four a month, and two of those are usually spent asleep in front of the television like the exhausted people we are.
Thirty three and thirty five, the near suburbs, together seven years. Five years of this between us, one child at home, and a level of tiredness that has become a personality. We met another couple two years ago and liked them enormously and it died entirely because nobody could find a date. Nobody did anything wrong. Four calendars is simply too many.
So we are looking specifically for people in the same trap. If your evenings are also strange, if you are also free on a Tuesday afternoon while everybody else is at work, then we are not a scheduling problem for each other, we are the solution. We would honestly rather have a weekday lunch with people who understand than a Saturday that never arrives.
What we want is friendship first and quite possibly only. If more came of it, it would be a long way down the road and with everybody talking about it properly beforehand.
He leads at home in a very low key way. She agrees with that description, which she has just read over his shoulder. Not looking for anything that needs a weekend. Not looking for a third. Not looking for people who will be understanding about our schedule twice and then stop suggesting things.
