We wrote this together at the kitchen table and argued about two of the sentences, which we have left in.
We are thirty six and thirty eight, married eight years, in Brooklyn. Four years ago one of us admitted something over a bottle of wine and the other one turned out to have been waiting for the conversation. Since then it has been ours, at home, very good, and entirely private.
What we would like is another couple. Not a third: we have talked it through and it is not what either of us wants. Another couple in the same position, where all four people are actually in it, and where nobody is being brought along to keep somebody else happy.
Honestly, the first thing we want is friends. We do not know a single other couple who do any of this, and it is strange to have something this significant in a marriage that cannot be mentioned to anybody. Dinner with people who understand, with nothing expected afterwards, would already justify the post. We have been in Brooklyn eleven years between us and we still have the social life of people who moved here last month.
She leads at home. He does not, and is not quietly hoping he might. That is settled and it is not up for exploration by anybody. Not looking for a single man. Not looking for a couple where one of them is doing it to keep the other one happy, and we will ask, and we are fairly good at telling. Not looking for a first meeting that is anything except a conversation with all four of us present.
