Thursday through Sunday I am working, usually until two or three in the morning, usually somewhere I have to drive to. Monday and Tuesday I am free and so is almost nobody else in this country.
Thirty one, São Paulo, switch, six years. Nothing I have started has lasted a year and every single one of them died on the calendar rather than on anything interesting. The pattern is always the same: two months of enthusiasm, then a month of trying to find a Saturday, then silence.
What I have realised is that I need somebody whose week is also strange. Other musicians, obviously. People in kitchens and bars. Nurses. Anybody who works when the city plays.
I lead more than I follow and I am genuinely happy either way. What I like is rope, restraint and being told what to do by somebody who has thought about it. I have very little interest in pain and quite a lot in being made to wait.
I am sociable, I know a lot of people, and none of them know about this, which is a strange way to live in a city where I am in front of a crowd four nights a week.
I share a place with two others and can host with some notice.
I am also completely happy for this to be a friendship for a long time first. That seems to be how most things work here and I have stopped fighting it.
