It is the middle of July and I am typing this in a coat, indoors, in a terrace built some time in the eighteen nineties with no insulation and one wall heater that trips the power if you run it while the kettle is on. Anybody who has rented in this city knows exactly the house I am describing.
Thirty two, the inner west, submissive, five years in. The practical consequence is that I cannot host between May and September in any way that either of us would enjoy. In February it is a completely different house. I had somebody over in summer who did not believe it was the same address when she came back in June.
What I want is a dominant with a warm room and the patience to work out where things happen for the next few months. That sounds like an absurdly small requirement and it has been the deciding factor twice.
Beyond the heating: something ongoing and quite structured. I like being given a shape for my week. I am organised, I do what I say I am going to do, and I am at my most difficult when nothing is expected of me.
Not looking for anybody who wants to meet at short notice, because I plan things. Not looking for the person who suggests I simply buy a heater, which I have done, and which the wiring in this house treats as an act of aggression.
